Marek is currently a research fellow in the computer science department at Ca' Foscari Venice University. He graduated in 2004 in computer science in Venice.
His current research interest are in the field of programming languages and databases applied to literary document processing and museum systems.
The Manuzio Programming Language is a functional object-oriented language with persistent capabilities and constructs specific to deal with literary analysis algorithms. The language is meant to be used in conjunction with a system to allow experts of the domain of application to formulate queries and write annotations on texts in an easy and natural way.
Traditionally collections of texts are digitally represented as a set of documents containing the text along with some kind of markup to define extra information, like metadata, annotations, etc. Manuzio proposes a different approach that models the textual information in a dual way: as a formatted sequence of characters, as well as a composition of a particular kind of entities, called textual objects. With such objects it is possible to represent different, potentially overlapping, structures over a text, together with complex annotations. Manuzio relay on statically typechecked language to define schemas of such textual objects and to write complex queries and applications on them through a set of powerful operators.
Multimedia systems for the fruition of artworks and cultural heritage (as research fellow)
01/02/2010 - 01/02/2011
"Sviluppo di sistemi multimediali interattivi e dei relativi contenuti informativi per sperimentare nuovi sistemi per la fruizione delle opere d’arte nel territorio veneto (multimedia interactive systems for cultural heritage on the Veneto territory)".
Study of the state of art of technologies in the topic of multimedia systems for the fruition of artworks and cultural heritage in general. A content management system to store museum data have been developed and used to aid the production of multimedia guides on iPod Touches.
Development of an art guide for the exhibition spaces of Punta della Dogana in Venice, featuring a collection of contemporary art pieces.

Multimedia systems for the fruition of cultural heritage (as PhD student)
01/02/2010 - 01/02/2011
During the PhD the research activity touched the problem of integration between multimedia systems and art exhibition spaces. An experiment has been conducted in the exhibitions ``Nigra Sum sed Formosa, sacro e bellezza nell'Etiopia cristiana'' and ``Bruce Nauman: Topological Gardens'' both held in Venice. An iPod Touch application has been used to present visitors with rich information about the artworks. Results of the studies on user interfaces and user behavior have been published and presented at international conferences.

In the context of the PRIN project "Musisque deoque II. Un archivio digitale dinamico di poesia latina, dalle origini al Rinascimento italiano", sponsored by the italian MIUR, the PhD thesis "Manuzio: an Object Language for Annotated Text Collections" has ben written. The thesis presents:
a specialized model to code literary texts in digital form that captures complex textual structures and multiple concurrent hierarchies;
a functional object-oriented language with persistent capabilities and constructs specific to deal with literary analysis algorithms;
a database structure to store texts and make them accessible from the language;
the guidelines for a complete system to store, analyze, and annotate complete textual corpora in a concurrent environment.
In the implementation phase an interpreter for the language has been developed and tested with two textual corpora (Shakespeare's plays and Eugenio Montale's poems).

Academic research projects aiming to set up a modern critical instrument to allow museum and exhibitions visitors to understand art, architecture, and other topics. On one hand, they provide visitors with comprehensive information about art collections, artists, with rich multimedia material prepared by experts i.e., researchers, art critics, collectionists, etc.. On the other hand, they provide not only designers and programmers but also domain experts (e.g., art critics) with a system in which they can gather, organize and tailor multimedia content of heterogeneous nature, instantiating a set of predefined templates on actual "visit paths".

Memory, Deception, Imagination (April 22 - July 25, 2010)
- nome cognome e matricola
- titolo del seminario
