The papers in this volume were presented at the Workshop on Algorithm Engineering (WAE 97) held September 11-13, 1997 in Venice, Italy. The Workshop was devoted to practical aspects of algorithms and their implementation issues. In particular, it brought together researchers, practitioners and developers in the field of algorithm engineering to foster further cooperation and exchange of ideas. Relevant themes of the Workshop were the design, experimental testing and tuning of algorithms in order to bridge the gap between their theoretical design and practical deployment.
There were 35 submissions, 31 of which were in electronic format. Their authors were from 16 countries from all over the world. The deliberations were conducted by the Program Committee electronically, via an electronic ``meeting'' that ran from June 15 to July 14, 1997. The Program Committee selected 22 abstracts for presentation at the Workshop. The abstracts were judged based on originality, quality and relevance to the subject area of the Workshop. Submissions were not refereed, and many represent reports of continuining research. A special issue of the ACM Journal on Experimental Algorithmics will be devoted to selected papers from the Workshop.
We would like to thank all of those who submitted abstracts for consideration, the Program Committee members and their referee for their invaluable contribution, and the members of the Organizing Committee for all their time and effort. A special thanks goes to Mike Saks and Yishay Mansour for allowing us to use their WEB server for the electronic PC meeting, and to Fabio Pittarello for his help in installing, maintaining and redesigning the user interface of this server.
We gratefully acknowledge support from ALCOM-IT, a European Union ESPRIT LTR Project, CNR (Italian National Research Council) and the Dipartimento di Matematica Applicata ed Informatica, University ``Ca' Foscari'' of Venice.
