Multimedia Information & Interaction Design Laboratory

Research Profile

In the information society the need to access complex information repositories is becoming crucial, involving new categories of users and new domains, characterized by mobile devices and pervasive services. Information management systems are evolving from a model based on structured homogeneous data towards flexible aggregations of highly heterogeneous media items, new usage patterns and strong customization.

Such evolution causes deep changes in the way users interact with information system, requiring increased effectiveness, usability and accessibility in different application areas. The research on methods for creating, organizing, and interacting with complex and heterogeneous data structures must take into account not only intrinsic factors such as fairness and security, but also factors related to the usage environment, to information sharing across devices, to universal access, to mobile architectures and to service integration.

The Multimedia Information & Interaction Design Laboratory (MIID) hosts research activity in databases, geographic information systems, multimedia systems, digital communications, human-computer interaction and the development of related prototypical applications. In such fields of interest the MIID Laboratory promotes the conception of theoretical models, the design of tools and systems, the implementation of demonstrations and pre-industrial prototypes and their evaluation.

The activity of the MIID Laboratory is currently focused on e-culture due to ongoing projects in conjunction with cultural institutions in Venice promoting research and prototype development of interactive multimedia systems for cultural heritage dissemination. The MIID laboratory also promotes research in interactive multimedia systems for industrial and commercial applications in synergy with other initiatives of Ca' Foscari, such as the Venice Sustainable Innovation Center.

The MIID Laboratory is open to interdisciplinary research and welcomes the contribution of associate members coming from different areas of research as long as they share the same interest for multimedia information and interaction design.
