Information for attendees
Regular papers (oral presentations)
Every session talk will be given a time-slot of 20 minutes.
Therefore, we kindly ask the regular paper authors to prepare
their oral presentations considering a 15 min. talk + 5 min. for questions.
LCD projectors and overhead projectors will be available in the conference rooms.
Short papers (posters)
Short papers will be presented during a special Poster
Session (Tuesday, Sep 30, 17:45 - 19:15).
The boards to attach posters are pretty large (Width=100 cm. X Height=150
cm.). However we suggest a poster size of W=60 cm. X H=105 cm., corresponding
to ten A4 paper sheets (landscape).
We will provide pushpins to attach posters to the boards.
Logistics
This map
illustrates several places mentioned below.
From the airport, the easy way to reach S. Marco, the center of Venice, is to take
the Alilaguna
waterbus service (about one hour). Theese are the maps of the
blue
and red Alilaguna lines.
From S. Marco you can reach the Accademia area in 20 minutes walking.
The other possibility is to use the ATVO blue bus
direct line. Consider that the bus stops in Piazzale Roma. From here you can take a public boat
(e.g., no. 82)
to reach the Accademia or S. Marco zone.
San Servolo, the venue of EuroPVM/MPI'03, is easily reachable by boat in 10 mins
from stop San Zaccaria.
Since several attendees have their hotels in the Accademia area, consider that from there
S. Zaccaria can be reached in 25 minutes walking. Otherwise, it is also possible to take a
boat going through the Grand Canal: check whether the boat stops in S. Marco or S. Zaccaria.
Only boat number 20 goes from S. Zaccaria stop to San Servolo.
Unfortunately, the stop of boat number 20 is not well signaled.
Arriving from S. Marco along Riva degli Schiavoni,
you have to cross two bridge (from the first one you can see the famous Ponte dei Sospiri).
After the second bridge, you will find S. Zaccaria. The stop of boat no. 20 is the last one, after a
big equestrian statue, just before the third bridge (in front of the Pensione Wildner).
You can
consult the
ACTV Web page for the schedule.
For the days of the conference the ACTV company will provide an
additional boat number 20, big enough to host all the attendees of the
conference. The additional boat will leave from S. Zaccaria at 1:50
P.M. on Sep 29, and at 9:00 AM on all the following days of the
conference (Sep 30, and Oct 1-2). The same boat will be provided at
the end of each conference day, except Sep 30 and Oct 1, when we will leave from
S. Servolo with a private boat.
In particular on Sep 30 this private
boat will leave after the Welcome Reception and
stop in San Marco, while on Oct 1 we will leave directly from S. Servolo
for the social excursion (see below).
Since the public boat is run by ACTV, passengers should have ACTV tickets. We
kindly ask the attendees to buy the tickets in advance in any of the
ACTV offices !!!
Unfortunately, boat tickets in Venice are very
expensive. One-way fare for boat no. 20 is Eur 1.80. Tickets for boats
that go through the Grand Canal cost Eur 5.00 (e.g. boat number 82, or 1). If
you plan to take several boats, consider buying a daily
ticket at Eur
10.50.
Hotels
Some attendees have their rooms at
Foresteria of Fondazione Levi. This detailed
map of Venice
shows location and directions to go to Foresteria.
Some other Hotels that host attendees are in the same area, close to
the Accademia bridge or S. Marco
(Hotel La Fenice,
Hotel S. Maurizio, and
Locanda Barberigo) .
Some other attendees stay in the Castello area, which is close to S. Marco and S. Zaccaria boat stop.
In particular, Hotel Al Piave
(Ruga Giuffa, 4838/40 - Castello),
and
Alloggi Barbaria (Castello 6573).
Excursion and social event (Wed, Oct 1, 2003 - afternoon)
We will leave from S. Servolo
with a private boat to visit the Venetian lagoon and its islands. In particular,
Burano Island, which features fishery, lace products and colorful houses along narrow canals.
This photo
is an example of a mini-canal on the island flanked by brightly colored houses.
After Burano, we will visit Torcello Island, which is very famous for its marvelous
Byzantine churches, but
where we will also find Locanda Cipriani,
the restaurant of the Social Conference Dinner.
We will return to Venice City Center (S. Marco) in the night.
Internet
We will provide a wireless access point (IEEE 802.11b) in the conference rooms.
In addition, attendees will have access to some desktop computers in a computer lab
close to the conference rooms.
Leaving from San Servolo
We realized that several people want to leave directly from San Servolo, and reach the airport
as soon as possible. This is possible by means of water taxis, which take about 30 minutes
to reach the Tessera Airoport. These taxis are very expensive. The price is Eur 90.00
if up to six people (and six luggage bags) are transported. So, at the conference site
we will try to organize collective taxis. Check with the Conference Desk when you arrive.
